Last Saturday I went with my father and a friend to take some measures of my father’s orange field, a not so simple task to forget about the daily work (yes, work can help you to relax) and also a chance to get some really fresh oranges (just taken from the tree).
Since my father has used zero fertiliser, grass killer or any other chemical the oranges are pure joy! some of them taste like lime, some others are a bit acid (like normal oranges), I easily ate four in the 20 minutes we were there (after we measure the field) and took at least 30 to home, my dad took another bunch to home and to my brother, Marcos (my friend in the picture below) did the same.
Quite often I found in vim that I would like the current buffer in a new tab, I use a lot the vertical and horizontal splits in vim, then I reach the limit (my screen limit) for the vertical/horizontal splits, this means: if I add a new vertical split the code looks ugly even if it respects the 80 columns width, or if add a new horizontal split there would be just too few lines that is not worth to keep the buffer.
Then I used open a new tab, type
:e
then type the path to the buffer I like to edit. Until now, now I open a new tab, then type
:ls
check then number of the buffer I want in this new tab and then type
:bX
being “X” the number of the buffer, ej “:b2“. Another trick is to type
My PS3 is basically a Netflix client (the Wii do the same thing) for my wife and kids, but for me this is where I play, my MacBook Pro sucks at games because of the shitty HD3000 video chip which is fine for video play but not that good for gaming, which in some way is good for me since I don’t play that much in the computer and the games that I really care about are not in OS X.
Yesterday the PS3 wasn’t starting, a few seconds after I hit the start button and the green led turns on the system halted with three beeps and the green led turned red and pulsating. According to this it is supposed to mean that the PS3 got overheated and turned itself off. So, what should I do?, nothing more than cleaning.
I live in a very dusty place, is not that dusty like the places that every Hollywood movie puts as Mexico but its dusty, and since I’ve never cleaned my PS3 it seemed to be logical that the fan wasn’t working fine or the head dissipator was blocked. Also, the PS3 already have some years and the warranty has already expired, so opening can’t make any hurt.

But there was still an issue, the PS3 wasn’t working, so I took it to the office, reading a bit I found that because of the overheat there may be some unsoldered chips and the way to fix it is heating it with a hot air gun, just clean the thermal paste, add more, and it should do the trick. There is even a vide of a guys putting the whole motherboard in the oven…
Well, it turned on and and I’m happy, although I think I should consider selling it to get a new PS4.
I have to create an email for work, I usually respond to email in my computer but since it have no power (I left it like that, I’m doing the monthly maintenance), I tried to do it I my iPad.
The message must contain a PDF file, the good thing is: that file is in Dropbox, so, just get that file and Do the mail. Wrong.
Dropbox in iOS doesn’t let you export the documents, if you want to “share” a file e you send only the link to the file but no the file. In some cases you need to send the file not the link to the file (automatic email processing for example). What did I did?
Took my phone with android, went to Dropbox, hit the three dots button and a menu opened, then select the “export” option, select the GMail app, create my message and sent it. That simple.
iOS is definitively far behind android. Is just not that easy to use.
I’ve recently post about my laptop having almost 4 years, also, if you follow me in twitter/facebook you know my rants about the OS X FS (HFS+) issues related to the IO. Many people have recommended to me to use an SSD disk, I hadn’t basically because of two factors: First, I’m kind of afraid to data loss because the lifespan of the SSD and the price.
Well, I finally put one of this things inside my computer and I’m really happy, let’s see how long this happiness last, I hope at least two years.
P.S. I wonder if “HFS” really means “Holy Fucking Shit!”
This is my computer, for personal and work stuff and is almost four years old, maybe if you own apple product for more time that I’ve done this doesn’t mean nothing, but to me it is, being a PC user for most of my life I’ve never been with a computer this long, the desktops were obsoletes ant the laptops broken, basically from the keyboard.
I really like this video, I’ve seen many people just staring at the screens when I go with my wife and kids to the market, sending selfies to instagram, what they are going to eat, of course is their right to do that, but when a friend prefer to be watching at his/her phone screen instead to be watching at me when I’m talking you know things are wrong.
If you are a friend of me and we usually talk face to face, please put your phone/tablet down when I’m talking to you, be sure that I’ll do the same.
Hi, this is me again And I’m about to talk about why iOS 8 is definitely not the most advanced operating system not even for mobile devices.
I recently got an iPad, I bought a couple of them because I wanted to give a good looking and well integrated device to my wife, she have a computer, which runs Linux from the very first day we get it, but now it is too old and with the kids is almost impossible to have a time to sit at the desktop and work with it, beside, my wife needs I terms of computational power are quite low, she basically Checks Facebook and watch videos in YouTube.
Then I got one too, my requirements are a lot higher than my wife but I already have a decent computer, and a smartphone, why the tablet., well, to read.
being said that, the iPads that my wife and I bought are both an iPad Mini, no retina display. It should fit our needs, and it actually do, my wife is pretty happy with her tablet and kindle works pretty fine un the iPad, the obvious benefit is the bigger screen.
But there are still hard corners in the iPad which I believe they are not fixed even getting the latest model, let me explain.
Apps are still second class citizens, they can’t talk to each other and while in iOS 8 there is a way to let one app accept content from another (to share) there is still much work to do, iOS should have done this years ago. And why this just came?, well, iOS apps are apps, complete programs that open one window, then switch windows but only inside that app, there was no way to go directly to one app screen without passing through the others. On the other side Android have intents, one app is formed by several intents, actions that can be called by any other app, the developer just have to define those intents in the app manifesto and that’s al, Android as platform will let other apps know at there is an intent that fill the need to share data.
There’s still no way to set your preferred apps, I like the Mail app, I like Safari, but I would love to set my preferred Browser (which is Chrome), set my default twitter client, my default camera app, etc… No way in iOS world. Microsoft faced a lawsuit because IE was installed by default and cannot be uninstalled in Windows, they were forced to modify their operating system to remove IE and ask you which browser do you want to use, why is this not the case with Apple?
iOS is definitely a one app only operating system, and I don’t mean having two apps in the screen at the same time, I mean switching between apps seamlessly, leaving an App means it will go to sleep mode, but frequently that mode means that the app will have to reload itself when you get back, do that while you are editing text (let’s say, a post like this), it sucks. Another example, Dropbox, you can’t use camera uploads if you don’t have Dropbox open… It sucks.
I hope that Apple will do something with his operating system to fill all those gaps, until that iOS may be a nice looking operating system and the apps would work fine (although I feel they are a lot limited because they are isolated, they don’t work together), but definitively Android is far, far more advanced than iOS, you can notice that because Apple is copying now what Android had years ago.
Today I’ve tried to renovate I’m federal ID, that ID is used for everything although in most cases it is just an identification but it is required for many means.
Since my current ID has expired I cannot do anything that involves the ID. The solution just renovate, but there’s a problem.. In order to renovate it you have to go to the IFE (INE) the requirements are: an updated and original birth certificate and something that proves where you live.
and that’s where my problem starts, I don’t have any original birth certificates, I just couldn’t find one in my house, I have copies but they just don’t work. I wonder why do I have to give that papers if the only thing I want is to get a new card. They are supposed to have my data already and providing the original current ID should be enough.
Well, I’ll have to get someone to send to me that birth certificate from the place where I was born because, as you may know, I can’t get one here, I’m not in the records/books.
I think it should be possible to get a new birth certificate on any municipal office on any state, we are in the age of the information, internet makes it possible to have either a central database or one per estate with the records of every citizen, the any other municipal office could query. With that you can get a new birth certificate everywhere, just request it in the apropriate office.
yes, it’s my fault not having the birth certificate, but things could definitively improve if nonsensical papers are required and if the can’t get rid off it the make it easy to get new ones.
Well, today I went to Huauchinango, Puebla, the main reason was to get my new federal ID since the one that I have has expired. But I couldn’t get the paper done and I’ll have to go in a couple of days again.
The trip is a bit tired, a couple (if not three) hours in bus mostly because of the road, curves in the sierra.
I like that place, seems to be a nice place to live and makes me reconsider Tuxtla as my next hometown, maybe San Cristobal de las Casas is better 😉
Now that I have one week of vacations (lol, I don’t even believe that, no with kids), I plan to spend some time with the PS3 at the normal hours (I usually play when everyone else is sleeping in the house).
I’ve already been playing it, I find it a bit hard because of the need to hack everything and the movements are a bit hard to do with precision, but I guess I only need to get used to the gameplay; in Batman Arkham City, Batman flies like if he were drunk and still I enjoyed the game.
Let’s see how much do I progress in this game on this week.
The last couple of days I’ve been working with Kivy. For those that don’t know is a framework to create applications in graphical environments and in multiple platforms, all of these in the most easy to use programming language: Python, (And I mean programming language, JavaScript doesn’t count).
Well, its interesting to work with it, basically because I have the influence of GTK+ and having no windows but calling to widgets creates some confusion. Also, there is this Kivy language which is something like what Glade is In GTK but a lot easier to read (actually everything is easier to to read than XML).
I’m just starting to do this, this post is not a “how to do things in Kivy”, but I hope I can write some of those in the next weeks.
Microsoft presented a sneak peak of what Windows 10 well be to be honest I think this is the refinement to Windows 8 that was required.
I personally find Windows as a desktop operating system pretty good, something that is in most of the ordinal computers in the world has to have something good.
Since Windows 7 I found it pretty useful, with Windows 8 the main drawback was the lack of the start menu but with windows 10 I see that those rough corners in 8 are gone.
We recently saw the demonstration that evolution is more powerful than anything, natural selection doing its work.
Apple released the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, two phones with bigger screens than the previous iPhones. The iPhone 5 was a mark because for long time Apple said that the 3.5″ was just perfect and nobody needed a bigger phone, when they increased the iPhone 5 screen they did only in the height so you can still get to the edge of the screen with the thumb. So, what happens with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus?.
Well, turns out that the public has spoken, the same thing happened with the iPad, people wanted a small screen and the iPad was suffering in sells because a lot of 7″ tablets were selling like hell (kindle, Nexus, Galaxy… name it) and even when the iPad was selling it was clear that they (Apple) needed a similar device to compete. The same happens with the iPhone, to many people, having a bigger screen in the Phone is a deal, but more importantly, having multiple phone sizes to please more people is the deal to the company. That’s why Samsung have a bunch of devices, from 2.5″ to more than 5″.
Also, Apple had to develop the iWatch. I do believe that this is something just to be in the wave, the Apple watch doesn’t offer anything better than the smartphone could do, neither the other wearables do, and was the opportunity to stay firm in creating products that do provide value to the user experience, not just something to get part of the pie.
I wonder where the computers department would go, in the operating system area there are already some changes, to me OS X Yosemite’s features didn’t required all that facelift, Mavericks looks a lot more pro than Windows or any Linux desktop, no need to move the icons, it’s perfect they wanted to add features like file tags, continuity (with iOS8), the new notification area, getting more integrated with iCloud etc.. but why changing the user interface?. To me transparencies should be in the past. I just hope that the hardware don’t get to big, like Alienware, or plastic.
This is the game that came to replace the beloved KillZone 3. I’m still playing the Story mode and sometimes I get into the multiplayer, but I’m in such a low level that I get killed just some seconds I spawn.
